Welcome to Our New Development Consultants
Brian Crist and David Kaplan joined the News Council this month as development consultants. Brian and David are committed to helping us reconnect with our donors and friends -- and reach out to new ones during these tough economic times.
Brian has a degree in international business and is a seasoned development expert with a background in member and donor cultivation for education and arts organizations. In addition to volunteer work, Brian also serves on his local zoning board of appeals. David has 12 years experience in fundraising and donor cultivation working with political campaigns, recently moving into the nonprofit realm. He currently serves as the Board Chair of Minnesota 2020 and graduated from American University in 2000 with a degree in Philosophy.
We're glad to have them with us!
New MNC Matching Fund
To encourage new and renewing donors to support the Minnesota New Council, our Board of Directors and Hearing Panel members are excited to announce that they are currently engaged in a drive to create a matching fund for the Council. Once complete, the fund will match donations to the Council dollar-for-dollar, doubling the goodwill of our donors. If you would like to take part in the fund drive and help support the vital work of the Council, you can:

Call for Programming Ideas
We are committed to bringing relevant and interesting programming into your community, your newsrooms and classrooms throughout the state. The News Council has been host to two successful public forums this year: one covering media coverage of the Somali community and the other focusing on healthcare and the news.
If you feel there is a subject or question the News Council can help bring to light at a public forum or event in your community, please let us know!

Role of Press Councils and Ombudsmen Worldwide
In May, the Center for International Media Assistance (CIMA), released the report, “Sword and Shield: Self-Regulation and International Media.” The report outlined efforts by the media to regulate their own work, focusing on the work of press councils and ombudsman throughout the world.

- The world’s first press council was founded in Sweden in 1916, and is still active today.
- Many press councils in established democracies are in the “business” of resolving complaints from the public about news coverage. In developing nations, press councils often take on the role of advocating for a free and responsible press and educating the public about the role of journalism in a democracy.
- Unlike the Minnesota News Council, participation in the complaint process of some press councils is mandated by law, and in many countries, the government runs the press council. The Minnesota News Council is an independent organization, and participation in all of our programs is voluntary.
- The first newspaper ombudsman worked in Tokyo in the 1920s, and the first American ombudsman appeared in 1967 and worked in Louisville, Kentucky. The Organization of News Ombudsmen (ONO) currently lists 48 members – with 18 of those located in the United States.
